Paul Clough 05-10-2005
Thanks Shaun, and sad about your bad experience. These anticyclonic almost (especially) calm / easterly / south- easterly days are never good in these parts for the vis and if its not Fog that comes, its often rain and fog as well when conditions start to change. Its very much as I say in the notes for guidance on the main BO Group website that the wind adds character to the day and I also believe I say something about "the dreaded flat calm" as well, and this is very true. Dave.

Hello David
Today at Paul Clough was the worst vis mig experience I have ever had. At last night’s bird club meeting I spoke to John Suckley who had been up at the watchpoint on Tuesday. He had said there had been no birds and this spell unfortunately continued today.

Thick misty conditions prevailed from 7.15 for an hour and then the sun broke through. There was very little wind but what there was, managed periodically to blow more mist into the clough every quarter of an hour (say). This created blanket visibility so the birds never moved out. Probably elsewhere, birds may have diverted to where it was clear but not near me.

I shall be going again after missing a week.
For your records the birds recorded are;

Meadow Pipit 9, Reed Bunting, Pied Wagtail. Goldcrest, Bullfinch, Robin and Chaffinch in the Clough.

Shaun
