Paul Clough 29-09-2005

Hi Shaun, Thanks for this, not a brilliant day for us either. Eight hundred and odd mipits might sound a lot, but most first thing and then long gaps with little to count! Dave.

Thursday 29th September 2005
0700 - 1105hr (DCB, JS)
Weather and sky:
An uncertain morning with rain squalls and more heavy showers especially to our north never out of sight. Wind: W F3 gusting F6 @ 0555hr, becoming W F4 by 0750hr and WNW F6 by 1100hr. Precipitation: frequent rain squalls and more heavy showers always prominent especially to the north over the south Dales and moors to our north, to the extent of quite possible blocking. Temp: 8 @ 0555hr, rising 9 by 0750hr and 10 by 1100hr. Visibility: 19km NNW / 100km E outside of squalls and rain storms. Cloud: cumulus / stratocumulus 3ok – 8ok. Pressure: rising quickly overnight and through the morning with 1012 at 0555hr and 1016 by 1105hr.

A poor morning with after the initial activity little in the skies. Meadow Pipits (the later ones), like you Bryan seemed to fare better, at height into the wind, than hugging the ground with a good third of the total count passing through in the first hour. It was thought that the much poorer conditions always visible to our north might have blocked potential movers. Very few hirundines this morning this morning except for a tight high group of about 20 Swallows moving off south. Calls were heard from an unseen Greenshank out to the north at 0746hr and a skein of 35 Grey Geese, thought to be Pinkfeet passed south but distant out to our east at 0730hr. Little on the shorescape.
