Skies on Fire! (c) 2009

Oxenhope, Bradford (W Yorks, England)
Friday 13 November 2009
Counting period: 6:55-10:20
Weather: SSW F3/F4, 6degC, 65 reducing 25km haze, 4/8 open to N - always fractus to the south, QNH 995 rising 997
Observers: Dave Barker

Moving Birds:
Black-headed Gull 54 -
Blackbird 3 -
Common Gull 20 -
Fieldfare 91 -
Lesser Black-backed Gull 3 -
Redwing 8 -
alba wagtail sp. 1 -
Greenfinch 1 -

Totals: 181 individuals, 8 species, 3:25 hours

Comments: Further reductions in moving birds and again with nothing in the upper sky at all. Nearly all of the thrushes were seen or heard before sunrise and several Redwing contact calls were overhead in darkness whilst stacking the car at 0630hr all suggesting a night migration ceasing with daylight. The first Starlingless morning of late autumn and an absolute dearth of passerines.

Caldene Fields, Low Moor... few birds! 13-11-2009

Caldene Fields, Bradford (W Yorks, England)
Friday 13 November 2009
Counting period: 7:00-8:45
Weather: Dry with 40% high cloud to the E/S/E and a temp of 5c. Open skies after dawn given excellent visibility well beyond 10 miles with a F1 S/W wind.
Observers: Martyn Priestley

Moving Birds:
Black-headed Gull 23 -
Jackdaw 2 -
Woodpigeon - 4
Carrion Crow 25 -
Meadow Pipit 1 -
Chaffinch 1 -
alba wagtail sp. 18 -
finch sp. 10 -
Fieldfare 138 -
Greenfinch 25 -
Redwing 6 -
Goldfinch 11 -
Magpie 1 -
Bullfinch - 5

Totals: 270 individuals, 14 species, 1:45 hours

Comments: Exceptional clear visibility today sadly few birds were moving. There was however, a noticeable minor movement of Fieldfare which were coming in from the E/S/E. 5 small parties were noted and 4 of these rested in trees by my watch point and then left to the N/N/W. A number of bullfinches were noted this morning to the N/W but were judged to be local birds and a high flying Magpie to the S/W was interesting.
