Friday 30th September 2005
0700 - 1000hr (DCB, JS)
Weather and sky:
A rapidly deteriorating morning with low cloud, fog and frequent driving drizzle. Wind: initially W F2 @ 0540hr, becommong WSW F3/4 by 0730hr and finally SSW F3 by 1000hr. Temp: 11 @ 0540hr, 13 by 0730hr, and finally 15 by 1000hr. Precipitation: some rain overnight, frequent horizontal driving drizzle. Visibility: 150m – 3000m, worse towards end of visit. Cloud: fog stratus throughout at watchpoint, although base at c1000ft asl below, occasional vertical visibility to open sky above. Pressure: falling quickly overnight but steady during the morning 1012hpa.

An atrocious morning at the watchpoint, although possibly still with good conditions for the vis a few hundred feet below. Whilst driving drizzle was cutting over the wave wall, behind it in the uparching shadow of the rain, it was calm and dry. Nevertheless pipits still moving albeit just a few, with peak time during the count period between 0800hr and 0815 when 101 were logged, all going SW, cutting through the fog. Others could at times be heard passing overhead but obscured from view. Interesting the SW direction? Other than this there was very little movement at all with the highlight being another Grey Plover with slurred whistle calls from the fog, echoing round (just like and east coast marsh!!) on several occasions before 0815hr when it was thought the bird left, heard but unseen. Some of the time in between the birds was spent trying out different variations of finn stick, supplied by John – I’ve never ever used one before but after this morning – a convert as binoculars are rock steady with the right design and without even making the effort to lift the arms etc., just so relaxing! Not for all purpose / conditions but certainly, yet another piece of equipment for the vis bag. Worth trying if you do a lot of bin work!! Left early, well and truly ""Fogged Off""
